Why do women carry so much in their bags?
Many of us carry a range of things including practical items
to touch up our appearance and manage our schedule, to more
personal items of sentimentality. Anthropologically speaking,
handbags may be an expression of our desire to nest! A desire to
need to feel life’s necessities within reach. The problem today
is that these ‘necessities’ have increased as life has grown in
complexity.
What is the emotional connection with bags?
Some of my clients describe their bags as a giving them a
feeling of comfort and security. Others recognise them as an
investment into which they carry their lives. My favourite quote
came from a lady who simply said that “a fab bag can turn jeans
and flip flops into a fashion statement”.
Which handbag started the ‘IT’ bag movement?
The Fendi Baguette bag appears to be credited with the start
of this phenomenon when it was first launched 12 years ago. It
has recently been re-launched.

Research carried out in England suggests the average woman
will own 111 handbags in her lifetime.
The average 30 year old woman will own 21 at any one time. Some
women have confessed to owning up to 100! Lucky ladies!
What makes a woman buy a new bag?
A range of prompts including following the seasonal trends,
following celebrity fashion, replacing an ‘ill’ and broken bag, pure
impulse or bending to the pressure of a pushy daughter!
