The Handbag: A Woman’s Last Stand?

by Debbie on February 27, 2010

I am pondering why we girls so often do things for others! Take the lady who despite being in her fifties and deserving of her own space and way of being, doesn’t let her hair lose from it’s tight bun because “my husband doesn’t like it down and messy”!  Or the women who cook eggs in the morning the way their guy likes it and has it the same way herself for ease!  Princess Diana and her flat shoes to avoid towering over Charles; my mother who leaves friends and champagne to rush home  to cook dinner and most moms who acquiesce to watch what others want on the TV. I admire such patience, calm and poise. I respect the desire for an easy untroubled path and I hope for most it is all in the name of ‘marital bliss’.

I ask myself “are these the  acts of  courtesy” by the fairer sex or do they constitute sacrifice tinged with growing resentment and middle aged rebellion?   Is it all in the name of ever lasting partnership or is this how we lose our identity one tight  chignon at  a time?

Perhaps this is why the handbag stands the test of time as the ‘all girl companion’.  I have yet to meet a man who dictates which one we buy, how we carry it or god forbid what goes on inside!  If you know of such a men out there – please DONT tell me – there are some things in life I chose to remain in ignorant bliss about!

Happiness is in the Bag!  Long may it stay that way!
